Dr. Vicki Harman is an Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of Surrey, UK. She holds a BA (Hons) in Social Policy from the University of Sussex, an MPhil in Criminological Research from the University of Cambridge, a PhD in Sociology from Royal Holloway, University of London, and a PG Cert in Academic Practice. Her research focuses on family life, gender, food practices, social inequalities, and qualitative methods. She co-directs the Centre for Research on Ageing and Generations and serves as Co-Editor of the journal Sociology.
Research Interests
Her work explores themes such as mothers’ food practices under economic hardship, digital parenting during the pandemic, and the gender dynamics of ballroom dancing. Notable projects include Doing Porridge (ESRC-funded), examining food in women’s prisons, and studies on family food practices and prison visiting rooms.

Publications & Recognition
Harman has authored books like The Sexual Politics of Ballroom Dancing and co-edited volumes on child feeding. Teaching & Supervision
She teaches modules on families, qualitative methods, and social inequalities. Having supervised five PhD completions, she currently guides three students. Her supervision areas include family life, food practices, and gender studies.
