Viacheslav Klimenko is a Research Fellow at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of South Carolina, affiliated with the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on theoretical astrophysics and UV/optical space astronomy, particularly investigating interstellar and circumgalactic medium properties, galaxy evolution, and primordial element abundances. He collaborates with Prof. Varsha Kulkarni on studies of gas flows around galaxies using UV and optical spectroscopy.
Education:
- B.Sc. in Physics (2009): Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Russia
- M.Sc. in Theoretical Physics (2011): St. Petersburg Academic University, Russia
- Ph.D. in Astronomy & Astrophysics (2016): Ioffe Institute, Russia
Research Interests: Dr. Klimenko specializes in analyzing physical conditions in interstellar/circumgalactic media, tracing galaxy evolution through star formation histories, and determining primordial light element abundances. His work utilizes quasar absorption-line spectroscopy and molecular cloud dynamics to probe high-redshift environments.
Scientific Awards:
- 2017: Best Scientific Work of the Year at the Ioffe Institute
Grants & Collaborations: As Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator, he secured $250,000 in grants from organizations like the Dynasty Foundation and Russian Science Foundation. His research has been disseminated through 15+ peer-reviewed publications since 2014, focusing on ISM dynamics, molecular gas evolution, and cosmological element abundance measurements.
Public Engagement: He delivered a public talk at the St. Petersburg Planetarium (2020), bridging academic research with broader scientific literacy.
