Veronique Dermauw is a leading researcher in zoonotic helminth and foodborne infections at the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp's Unit of Zoonoses. As the acting head of the Unit of Zoonoses, she focuses on public health challenges such as taeniasis/cysticercosis and echinococcosis. She holds a PhD in Veterinary Sciences (Ghent University, 2013) and has led numerous international projects in Africa, Vietnam, and South Africa. Her work emphasizes capacity-building, particularly through the DGD-ITM Framework Agreements and the MSc Global One Health program, a collaborative initiative with the University of Pretoria.
Her research spans epidemiology, intervention strategies, and One Health approaches, with notable contributions to understanding fascioliasis in Vietnam, echinococcosis in Africa, and Toxoplasma gondii at human-livestock interfaces. She coordinates large-scale studies and educational programs, including the South Africa DVTD component of the DGD-ITM 2022-2026 initiative. Her projects address parasitic infections in livestock and humans, with a focus on reducing zoonotic disease burdens in resource-limited settings.
Dermauw’s academic leadership includes directing the MSc Global One Health program and teaching epidemiology/helminthology modules. She has supervised over 50 research outputs (2013–2025), with recent work highlighting antimicrobial resistance in food systems and neurocysticercosis outbreaks in Belgium. Her collaborations span institutions like KU Leuven, NIH-funded consortia, and Vietnamese public health partners.
Key projects include the FA5 Ethiopia/DR Congo/Vietnam programs targeting neglected tropical diseases and antimicrobial resistance. Her grants include VLIR-UOS 'EmFaVie' and FWO-NAFOSTED 'FasciCoM', focusing on fascioliasis and foodborne trematodes. Dermauw’s research bridges veterinary and human health, with implications for global policy and sustainable development goals.
