Veronica Vicente is an Associate Professor affiliated with the Department of Clinical Research and Education at Södersjukhuset, Karolinska Institutet. She leads a research group focused on prehospital emergency care, utilizing advanced data analysis, machine learning, and precision care to improve patient outcomes. Her work spans all patient demographics and emergency scenarios.
- Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine (KI, 2020)
- Doctor of Medicine (KI, 2013)
- Specialist Nursing Degree (KI, 2012)
- Master of Medicine (KI, 2003)
Her research integrates machine learning with prehospital care to optimize EMS response times, develop decision support systems, and improve assessment of non-specific chief complaints. Current projects include studying nonlinear patterns in breathing emergencies and creating national patient-centered clinical pathways for sepsis management in Sweden.
Recent publications demonstrate expertise in: Multivariate EMS Analysis (2025), Prehospital Biomarker Testing (2021), and Telemedicine Implementation (2021). The 15 most recent articles focus on machine learning applications, leadership challenges, and care optimization for non-specific complaints.
Active research grants include:
- Identification and management of patients with myocardial infarction in ambulance care (Stockholm Region NSV Fund, 2025)
- Acute coronary syndrome management (Stockholm Region NSV Fund, 2024)
She leads a multidisciplinary team at Södersjukhuset's Prehospital Emergency Care unit, collaborating with doctoral students Peter Hill, Jacob Lederman, and Henrik Lindlof, as well as Assistant Professors Sebastian Bjöhle and Helena Sjölin.
