Veronica O'Carroll is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Postgraduate Teaching in the School of Medicine at the University of St Andrews. She serves as Programme Director for the PgCert/PgDip/MSc Health Professions Education course. With over 25 years of combined healthcare and education experience, she specializes in teaching, curriculum development, and educational research in healthcare contexts. Her roles include Associate Editor for the Journal of Interprofessional Care and Board Member of the Centre for Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE).
Education Qualifications: PhD (Psychology, University of St Andrews), MSc (Professional and Higher Education, Queen Margaret University), BA (Hons) Nursing (Bucks New University), Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2023).
Research Focus: Interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice in healthcare, digital health technologies (e.g., telemedicine, extended reality), and healthcare education innovation. She employs mixed-methods approaches to investigate interprofessional learning, teleconsultation training, and the integration of VR in medical education.
Key Projects: Leads initiatives such as ComSIM (Community Orientated Simulation) and interprofessional eye health programs in Rwanda. Her work addresses health inequity through simulation-based education and collaborative practice for multimorbidity management.
Awards: Recognized with the #TopDownloadedArticle Prize (2024) and the Interprofessional.Global Award (2023). She contributes to global healthcare education through editorial and advisory roles, including external examining at Glasgow Caledonian University and University of Dundee.
Teaching & Supervision: Supervises BSc, MSc, and PhD students in IPE, digital health, and telehealth. Serves as an external examiner for postgraduate medical programs and mentors early-career researchers in interprofessional research methodologies.
