Veronica Hicks

Veronica Hicks is an Assistant Professor and Licensure Coordinator in the Department of Art Education at Virginia Commonwealth University's School of the Arts. She holds a Ph.D. in Art Education and Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies from Pennsylvania State University, alongside a B.S. in Art Education from Kutztown University and an M.A. in Art Education (Special Populations) from Moore College of Art & Design. Her research focuses on intersectional dynamics in art education, including race, gender, and disability, with a particular emphasis on women of color art teachers and students with disabilities. Dr. Hicks advocates for transformative pedagogical practices that prioritize empathy and choice in pre-service teacher preparation.

Her academic journey includes prior roles as a PreK-12 art teacher and as the Virginia Art Education Association’s Research Representative. Key research interests include resilience among pre-service teachers, policy critiques in art education, and innovative uses of graphic narratives (e.g., comics) to document educational experiences. She actively addresses systemic inequities through her scholarship and curriculum development.

Dr. Hicks’ work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications, emphasizing how art education can foster resilience and equity. She collaborates across disciplines to explore how marginalized voices can reshape educational narratives and policies.
