Dr. Venugopal Mendu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant & Soil Science at Texas Tech University, specializing in plant cell wall biology and functional genomics. He teaches graduate courses in genomics and plant genetics while leading a research program focused on gene discovery for crop improvement and sustainable biofuel production.
- BS (Agriculture) and MS (Genetic & Plant Breeding) from ANGR Agricultural University
- Ph.D. in Plant Physiology/Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from the University of Kentucky
His research explores plant development, biotic/abiotic stress responses, and cellulose biosynthesis, with applications in cotton fiber quality and bioenergy crops. His lab employs molecular, genetic, and biochemical techniques, using Arabidopsis as a model for translational studies in cotton, sorghum, corn, soybean, white teak, and peanut.
Dr. Mendu has graduated 3 Master’s students, currently advises 5 Ph.D. students and 1 Master’s student, and mentors 3 postdoctoral scholars. He secured $3,186,074 in research funding, with a personal share of $1,168,374 from federal and industrial sources.
