Veljko Dubljevic is a University Faculty Scholar and Professor of Philosophy and Science, Technology & Society (STS) at North Carolina State University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He leads the NeuroComputational Ethics Research Group and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Bioethics – Neuroscience. His work focuses on neuroethics, AI ethics, and the cognitive neuroscience of moral judgment, with over 90 peer-reviewed articles and four academic books to his name.
Education: PhD in Political Science (University of Belgrade, 2011), D.Phil. in Philosophy (University of Stuttgart, 2014), and postdoctoral research in neuroethics at McGill University (2016). He also holds an M.Sc. in Economics (Educons University, 2008) and a B.A. in Philosophy (University of Novi Sad, 2001).
Research interests include the ethics of neurotechnology, AI governance, and moral judgment processes. He has led funded projects such as the NSF CAREER grant on virtual reality simulations for autonomous vehicle ethics and the NCSU RISF grant on sociotechnical principles for AI ethics. His work bridges neuroscience, philosophy, and policy, addressing issues like cognitive enhancement, brain-computer interfaces, and dementia ethics.
Key awards include his University Faculty Scholar designation. He advises international bodies like the International Neuroethics Society and co-edits the Advances in Neuroethics series. His interdisciplinary approach spans ethics, law, and technology, with recent focus on AI alignment, moral stress in law enforcement, and neuroethical frameworks for emerging technologies.
Notable grants include a $571K NSF grant for AV ethics research and a $985K NSF RAISE grant for workforce empowerment technologies. His labs and teams collaborate across disciplines, emphasizing practical ethics translation and societal impact.
