Velina Hasu Houston is a Distinguished Professor of Theatre in Dramatic Writing at the School of Dramatic Arts at the University of Southern California. She also holds affiliated faculty roles in East Asian Studies and American Studies & Ethnicity, and is part of the Shinso Ito Center for Japanese Religions & Culture. Her roles include Director of MFA Dramatic Writing, Head of Undergraduate Playwriting, and Resident Playwright at USC.
Education:
- PhD, University of Southern California
Her research focuses on immigrant experiences, transnational identity, and gender studies, particularly through theatrical works that explore cultural hybridity and community engagement. Notable projects include her iconic play Tea, designated a classic by Roundabout Theatre, and a Mellon-funded project on Japanese-Brazilian identity.
Her work engages with female condition narratives, using the body as a site of cultural and gendered critique. Recent work includes climate change-focused Sacrifice Zone: Los Angeles, blending theatre and media arts.
