Vassili Vorontsov is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM) at the University of Strathclyde, where he has been a faculty member since 2018 under the Chancellor’s Fellowship scheme. His work bridges materials science and advanced manufacturing, focusing on the deformation and environmental performance of high-performance alloys.
His educational background includes a PhD in Materials Science and Metallurgy from the University of Cambridge and an MEng in Materials from Imperial College London. Prior to Strathclyde, he held research positions at Imperial College London, supported by Rolls-Royce and EPSRC, working on aerospace, biomedical, and nuclear alloys.
His research interests lie in understanding the behavior of advanced metals across length scales—from atomic to component level—using sophisticated characterization tools and computational modeling. Key areas include superalloys, titanium alloys, high-entropy alloys, deformation mechanisms, and digital twin applications in manufacturing. He employs techniques such as electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), digital image correlation, and in-situ mechanical testing.
The recent publications highlight a strong focus on experimental simulation of manufacturing processes like open-die forging and cogging, microstructural evolution under complex loading, and failure mechanisms in advanced alloys. There is a clear trend toward integrating miniaturized testing with computational models to optimize high-integrity manufacturing, particularly in aerospace and energy sectors.

Vorontsov actively supervises PhD students and leads multiple EPSRC-funded research projects, including those on digital twins for titanium manufacturing and miniaturized bi-axial testing. He collaborates with industrial partners like Rolls-Royce and participates in national initiatives such as the Henry Royce Institute. His advisory roles and external examining reflect his growing leadership in the academic community.
He is involved with several research labs and initiatives at Strathclyde, particularly those focused on advanced manufacturing and materials characterization. His projects emphasize the development of novel testing apparatus for in-situ SEM studies and the creation of digital twins for resource-efficient metal forming. These efforts are part of a broader team effort within DMEM to innovate in high-value manufacturing.
