Alexander Varshavsky is a Professor of Biology at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), holding the Thomas Hunt Morgan Professorship since 2017. Previously, he served as the Howard & Gwen Laurie Smits Professor of Cell Biology at Caltech from 1992 to 2016 and held faculty roles at MIT from 1977 to 1987, including Associate Professor and Professor positions.
- Education:
- B.S. in Chemistry, Moscow University (1970)
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Institute of Molecular Biology, Moscow (1973)
- Research Fellow, Institute of Molecular Biology, Moscow (1973-1976)
Varshavsky's research focuses on the ubiquitin system and the N-end rule pathway, which are critical for protein degradation and regulation in cells. His work has pioneered novel approaches to cancer therapy by elucidating mechanisms of cellular homeostasis and targeted protein destruction.
Scientific Awards highlight his contributions to biomedicine and cancer research, including the Albert Lasker Award (2000), Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences (2014), and Dr. Paul Janssen Award (2024). Notably, he has received international recognition through the Wolf Prize (2001), King Faisal Prize (2012), and Grande Médaille of the French Academy of Sciences (2016).
