Vanessa Thompson

Vanessa Thompson, MD is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. She serves as a primary care provider at the Richard Fine People's Clinic and actively participates in resident inpatient medical services. As a clinician-educator, she holds roles as a coach for UCSF's School of Medicine and member of the Program for Clinician Educator Success (PROcess). From 2018–2022, she was Associate Program Director for Curriculum and Mentoring in UCSF's Internal Medicine residency program. Dr. Thompson is a co-founder of the Women in Leadership Development (WILD) program and advocates for diversity and equity in medicine. She received her MD from UCSF with a focus on Global Health and completed residency in Internal Medicine at UCSF. She also holds a BA in History from Trinity College.

Research Interests: Dr. Thompson focuses on improving medical education, advancing healthcare equity, and supporting women in academic medicine. Her work addresses diversity in residency training, mentorship strategies, and systemic barriers for underrepresented groups. She has contributed to studies on clinical performance metrics, gender/racial disparities in medical training, and HIV/AIDS care in underserved populations.

Publications: Her recent work emphasizes medical education reform, residency assessment, and strategies to enhance representation of women in leadership roles. Key themes include gender/ethnicity impacts on clinical training outcomes and innovative mentorship frameworks.
