Dr. Vanessa McDonagh is a Lecturer in Modern Foreign Languages at the University of Glasgow, serving as Co-Programme Lead for MSc and MEd TESOL Programmes. She teaches core courses including Classroom Processes, Developing Professional Practice, and Language Learning and Applications across TESOL curricula.
Her academic credentials include an EdD from Queen's University Belfast (2023) focused on teacher identity construction, an MA in Management in Education from Bilkent University (2010), and a BA in History, Sociology & Politics from the National University of Ireland Galway (1999). Additional professional qualifications feature the Cambridge DELTA (2009) and ICELT (2006).
Her research centers on teacher identity formation through reflective practice, narrative inquiry, and emotional dimensions in initial teacher training. Work examines how TESOL student-teachers develop professional identities via microteaching, reflective writing, and approximations of practice, emphasizing lived experiences of international students.
Analysis of her 2018-2025 publications reveals consistent use of narrative methods to investigate identity construction, with emerging focus on emotional drivers and EAP curriculum co-design. Studies predominantly employ qualitative frameworks within UK-based TESOL master's programs.
Dr. McDonagh supervises MEd/MSc TESOL dissertations and delivers international professional development, including sessions at Saint Mary’s University (Canada). Her teaching spans pre-sessional English programs, business communication modules, and core TESOL curriculum design for postgraduate international students.
