Vanessa Hettinger is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Human Behavior, Justice & Diversity Department at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. She holds a PhD in Cognition, Neuroscience, and Social Psychology from the University of South Florida (2014), a JD from Harvard Law School (2008), and a BA in Psychology and English from Amherst College (2004).
Her research focuses on attitudes toward sexual orientation and gender, employing a social cognitive approach. Key themes include the negative impacts of 'positive' stereotypes, masculinity’s link to professional status, and essentialism’s role in prejudice. She has received awards such as the 2017 Summer Institute Fellowship for Academic Feminist Psychologists and a 2016 Faculty Development Grant.
Her publications explore topics like media fandom identity dynamics, LGBTQ+ rights perceptions, gender in romantic relationships, and workplace flexibility dilemmas. She actively seeks grants to support her research and educational initiatives.
