Vanessa Bohns is the Braunstein Family Professor and Chair of Organizational Behavior at Cornell University's ILR School. She holds a PhD from Columbia University and an AB from Brown University. Her research focuses on social influence, compliance, consent, and communication dynamics in professional and personal contexts. She has authored the influential book You Have More Influence Than You Think (2021), which explores how people underestimate their persuasive power.
Education includes a PhD and MPhil in Social Psychology from Columbia University (2005-2008), and an AB in Psychology from Brown University (2000). Her research has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation and others, totaling over $1.4 million.
Research interests span ethical leadership, workplace communication, and the psychology of consent. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and NPR’s Hidden Brain. She has received awards such as the SUNY Chancellor’s Award (2021) and Thinkers50 Radar (2022).
Teaching includes courses like Psychology of Work and Morality at Work. She advises numerous graduate and undergraduate students, contributing to their academic and professional development. Her service roles include editorial board memberships at top journals and leadership in academic committees.
