Vanessa Barrs is a Professor in Feline Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University of Sydney's Sydney School of Veterinary Science and the Marie Bashir Institute of Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity. She is a registered Specialist in Feline Medicine and established the Valentine Charlton Cat Centre. Her roles include former Director of the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (2013–2017) and current Head of the Department of Small Animal Medicine. Internationally, she served as President of the International Society of Companion Animal Infectious Diseases (2015–2018) and sits on the Marie Bashir Institute Advisory Board.
Her research focuses on emerging infectious diseases, particularly fungal and viral pathogens in companion animals and wildlife. Key achievements include discovering Aspergillus felis, a novel fungal species causing fatal feline rhinosinusitis. She has over 130 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, emphasizing One-Health approaches in pathogen discovery and antifungal resistance.
Her teaching spans DVM courses on research, clinical practice, and supervising 5 PhD, 2 Master’s, and 4 Honors students. Current projects explore emerging mycoses, viral loads in shelter cats, and cross-species parvovirus transmission. Awards include the 2018 Chief Executive Women’s Leadership Program and multiple teaching excellence accolades.
