Dr. Maura Carrai is a Senior Research Fellow in Aquaculture Molecular Health at the Tropical Futures Institute, James Cook University, Singapore. She holds a PhD in Microbiology and Genetics (Pisa University, 2010), an MS in Molecular Biology (2005), and a BS in Biological Sciences (2002). Her research focuses on virology, genetics, and metagenomics, with recent emphasis on viral studies in cats, dogs, pigs, and fish. Notably, she discovered Felis catus papillomavirus 6 during metagenomic analysis. Her work bridges animal and human health, addressing emerging pathogens and zoonotic risks.
Education:
- PhD in Microbiology and Genetics, Pisa University (2007–2010)
- MS in Molecular Biology, Pisa University (2003–2005)
- BS in Biological Sciences (Genetics Major), Pisa University (1998–2002)
Research interests span virology, genomics, and molecular biology, with recent projects exploring viral diversity in domestic animals and wildlife. Her studies on feline papillomavirus and canine parvovirus highlight her expertise in pathogen discovery and molecular epidemiology. She employs metagenomic approaches to identify novel viruses in ecological and clinical contexts.
Publications reflect her interdisciplinary work, including analyses of viral prevalence in livestock, wildlife, and companion animals. Her findings contribute to disease prevention strategies and One Health frameworks.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the Tropical Futures Institute, focusing on aquaculture health and molecular diagnostics.
