Dr. Valluvan Jeevanandam is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, specializing in cardiac surgery and mechanical circulatory support. He holds academic leadership roles in cardiovascular research and clinical care. His education includes an MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, followed by residency and fellowship training at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.
Dr. Jeevanandam's research focuses on advanced heart failure therapies, including left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), heart transplantation, and surgical management of complex cardiovascular conditions. His work emphasizes optimizing outcomes for patients with devices like the HeartMate, addressing complications such as thrombosis and hemodynamic instability. He has contributed to consensus guidelines on donor selection for transplantation and surgical techniques for bloodless procedures in Jehovah’s Witness patients.
His clinical and research interests span surgical interventions for aortic dissection, tricuspid valve dysfunction, and ambulatory counterpulsation devices. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications, with recent work addressing LVAD thrombosis management, device-related thrombosis, and improving donor heart utilization. His team collaborates on clinical trials for novel therapies and participates in international expert panels for cardiac surgery standards.
Key clinical areas include heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and multi-organ transplantation. His lab and clinical programs focus on translational research to enhance patient outcomes through innovative surgical techniques and device optimization.
