Valesca Retèl

Valesca Retèl serves as Head of the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) division at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI-AVL) and holds an endowed professorship at Erasmus University Rotterdam's Erasmus School of Health Policy and Management, focusing on "Health Technology Assessment in translational research in oncology".

Her research pioneers early-stage Health Technology Assessments for innovative oncology applications including Next Generation Sequencing, Immunotherapy, big data analytics, Image Guided Surgery, and cancer survivorship. She employs sophisticated mathematical modeling to integrate cost-effectiveness, organizational implications, ethical-legal considerations, and patient-centered outcomes during technology development. A key methodology involves broad-spectrum scenario drafting for Coverage with Evidence Development programs, currently coordinating four such projects at NKI-AVL.

Internationally, Retèl coordinates the Health Economics working group of the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) and co-leads the research team for the European Fair Pricing Network (EFPN). She also contributes to national policy as a member of the scientific advisory board for the National Health Care Insurance Board.

With a PhD in Health Economics and MSc in Health Sciences, her career progression includes PhD candidate at NKI-AVL (2006-2010), Research Fellow at University of Geneva (2010-2013), PostDoc and Senior Scientist positions at NKI-AVL/University of Twente (2013-2020), and Policy Advisor to NKI-AVL Board (2016-2020) before assuming her current leadership roles.
