Oriana Ciani serves as Associate Professor of Practice at SDA Bocconi School of Management, Bocconi University, where she has collaborated since 2010 within the Government, Health and Not for Profit Division. Her institutional roles include coordinating the Epidemiology and Public Health module in the MIHMEP program and serving on the Scientific Advisory Board for Italy's parliamentary group on Digital Therapeutics. Previously, she held a Fulbright Research Scholarship at Yale University in 2020.
Her academic foundation includes dual Master's degrees in Biomedical Engineering (Politecnico di Milano) and Healthcare Management (SDA Bocconi), culminating in a PhD from University of Exeter Medical School focused on surrogate endpoints validation. This engineering-to-policy trajectory underpins her methodological rigor in health technology evaluation.
Professor Ciani's research centers on Health Technology Assessment (HTA) systems, with specialized expertise in medical devices and digital health evaluation. She investigates evidence synthesis techniques for policy decisions and innovative payment models, recently leading Horizon Europe's HI-PRIX project. Her work bridges engineering principles with health economics to address real-world decision-making gaps in European healthcare systems.
Her 2025 publications demonstrate thematic consistency across diverse clinical areas including oncology, nephrology, and rehabilitation. Key trends reveal growing applications of machine learning in health economics, refined methodologies for surrogate endpoints, and cross-border implementation of patient decision aids—reflecting her commitment to methodological innovation in HTA.
Major recognitions include:
- Bocconi Research Award (2023)
- Egon Jonsson Award (2016)
- Exeter Impact Award (2013)
- ISPOR Best Student Presentation (2013)
- AIES Young Researchers Award (2010)
As active grant leader, she currently directs HI-PRIX (Horizon Europe) while previously managing FP7 and H2020 projects involving multinational consortia. Her teaching portfolio spans graduate instruction and professional training in health economics, with editorial responsibilities for Value in Health journal. Professional engagement includes leadership roles in EuHEA, ISPOR, and iHEA.
Though not leading a formal laboratory, Professor Ciani coordinates research teams through EU projects and maintains strong clinical-academic networks evidenced by recent collaborations with Yale, European cancer centers, and nephrology consortia. Her policy advisory role with the Italian parliament demonstrates translational impact of her methodological work.
