Dr Valerie Wallace is a Lecturer in the History of Scotland and the Wider World (c.1600-c.1914) at the University of St Andrews' School of History. She holds a research fellowship at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and has held roles at UCL's Bentham Project and Harvard's Center for History and Economics. Her research focuses on Scottish ideas, religious institutions, and legal frameworks in British colonial contexts. She leads the 'People of Parliament' digital project on New Zealand's parliamentary history and co-edits the Journal of Scottish Historical Studies.
Wallace's research explores the influence of Scottish religious dissent and legal systems in settler colonies. Key works include Scottish Presbyterianism and Settler Colonial Politics (2018), which won the Frank Watson Prize. Current projects examine Scots law's role in the British Empire, supported by a Royal Society of New Zealand grant. Her interdisciplinary approach spans colonial history, legal studies, and digital humanities.
Her scholarly outputs include peer-reviewed articles on topics like colonial treaties, global Christianity, and legal systems. Awards include the Daiches-Manning Memorial Fellowship (2023). Supervised PhD student Maggie Blackburn contributes to her research on settler colonialism. Wallace's work bridges historical analysis with public engagement through digital platforms.
