John Charles Weaver is a Professor in the Department of History at McMaster University, with additional affiliations as Associate Member of Geography (1988) and Visiting Research Fellow at Australian National University (1991, 1993). He served as Department Chair (1988-1993) and Dean of Graduate Studies (1994-1999).
Education:
- B.A. from Queen’s University (1969)
- Ph.D. from Duke University as James B. Duke Commonwealth Scholar (1973)
Research Interests: Urban governance, land policy on colonial frontiers, criminal justice systems, housing/suburbanization, and historical sociology of suicide. Current project examines global capitalism through sea-borne trade (1200-present) with focus on economic intangibles like property rights and dispute resolution.
Publication Trends: Recent works concentrate on New Zealand's socio-economic history, colonial land policies, and mental health impacts of economic shifts. Methodologically combines legal history with environmental and economic analysis across British settler colonies.

- Ferguson Prize (Canadian Historical Association) for The Great Land Rush
Graduate Supervision: Mentored 12 PhD students in urban/legal history and Ontario history. Current collaborations include co-editing essays on globalization with Will Coleman and Steve Streeter (Globalization Institute).
