Dr. Valerie Steeves is a Full Professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Social Sciences and a faculty member at the Centre for Law, Technology and Society. She co-leads The eQuality Project, an SSHRC-funded initiative examining online commercial profiling’s impact on children. Her work spans youth media use, privacy rights, and digital ethics, with over 15 years of research through projects like Young Canadians in a Wired World.
Her research emphasizes the societal implications of new technologies, particularly on human rights. She has advised parliamentary committees on privacy legislation and collaborated with government bodies to develop privacy education materials. Her educational games, including Sense and NonSense and Privacy Playground, have garnered national and international recognition.
Dr. Steeves holds grants from SSHRC and has led multidisciplinary teams involving researchers, advocates, and policymakers. Her contributions bridge academic research with public policy, focusing on equitable digital futures for youth.
