Dr. Valerie Staton Matthews serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology & Biopsychology at Ohio Dominican University, where she maintains an active research program bridging behavioral science and conservation efforts.
Her academic credentials include:
- B.A. from Bucknell University
- M.S. from University of Georgia
- Ph.D. from University of Georgia
Specializing in animal behavior with foundational training in primate studies under Douglas Candland at Bucknell and Dorothy Fragaszy/Irwin Bernstein at Georgia, her research trajectory evolved from domestic ferret aggression studies to leading-edge conservation work. Currently collaborating with Arizona Game and Fish Department, she monitors wild North American Black-footed Ferret populations restored through captive breeding programs. This work integrates field ecology with behavioral analysis to support species recovery.
Dr. Matthews actively incorporates undergraduate students into her conservation projects, organizing field trips to Arizona where students gain hands-on experience in wildlife monitoring and data collection for endangered species restoration efforts.
