Professor Oosterveld has developed significant expertise in outer space law, having taught the subject for 17 years initially as a module of Public International Law and now as a standalone course. Her research spans multiple dimensions of space law including international environmental space law, space mining regulations, state responsibility frameworks in space contexts, use of force considerations in space, peace and security mechanisms for space environments, feminist perspectives on space law, and Canadian approaches to space governance. Her work bridges legal theory with practical applications in both terrestrial and extraterrestrial contexts.
Before joining Western Law, Professor Oosterveld served in the Legal Affairs Bureau of Global Affairs Canada, where she provided legal advice on international criminal law matters related to armed conflict. This government experience has informed her academic work, particularly in connecting theoretical legal frameworks with real-world implementation challenges. She maintains active professional connections through her ORCID profile (0000-0002-6055-5433) and LinkedIn presence.
