Valerie Lewis, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and a Fellow at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Her research focuses on healthcare payment and delivery reforms, health equity, and safety-net healthcare systems. She holds a BA from Rice University and MA/PhD in Sociology from Princeton University, with postdoctoral training at Harvard's Kennedy School.
Her work addresses topics like Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), social risk screening in clinical settings, and healthcare disparities affecting vulnerable populations. Key areas of expertise include Medicare/Medicaid systems, telehealth equity during the pandemic, and rural healthcare challenges. Dr. Lewis has been funded by NIH, AHRQ, and major foundations such as Robert Wood Johnson and Arnold Ventures.
Routine clinical practice patterns, healthcare provider engagement strategies, and organizational alliances between healthcare and community groups are central themes in her research. Her recent studies examine intimate partner violence screening in postpartum populations and ACO impacts on dually eligible beneficiaries.
