Valerie Karno is an Associate Professor and Director of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at the University of Rhode Island. She holds a J.D. from Hastings College of the Law and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Southern California. Her research bridges Law and Literature, Gender Studies, and Visual Culture, examining topics like legal agency in media, ethnic literature, and critical race theory. She has published in journals such as College Literature and Studies in Law, Politics, and Society, and her work explores themes including treaty interpretation, representations of race, and feminist legal theory.
Her teaching spans courses like 'Law & Literature,' 'Immigrant Women Authors,' and 'Postmodernism of the Americas.' Karno is also actively involved in pre-law advising, diversity workshops, and the Multicultural Center at URI. Notable recognition includes an NEH award for collaborative research on punishment with Austin Sarat.
Her professional activities include roles as an editor for legal journals, authoring book reviews on 9/11 and anti-discrimination laws, and mentoring students through URI’s Honors program. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates academic research with practical legal and cultural analysis.
