Ryan Trimm is a Professor of English at the University of Rhode Island (URI), with a joint appointment in Film Media and affiliation with the Center for the Humanities. He specializes in contemporary British literature and film, postcolonial theory, cultural studies, and heritage studies. His research examines how cultural heritage interacts with multicultural societies, as seen in his book Heritage and the Representation of the Past in Contemporary Britain (2017). Trimm has held roles as URI’s Department Chair (two terms) and Director of Graduate Studies. His work bridges literary analysis with philosophical inquiry, addressing themes like financial speculation, spectral narratives, and postmodern adaptations.
Trimm’s education includes a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a B.A. from the University of Alabama. He teaches courses on modern British literature, postcolonial studies, film, and narrative theory. Notable courses include 'The Culture of Afterwards' and 'Cinematic Adaptations of Catastrophe Lit.'
His research interests span heritage politics, postimperial narratives, and the interplay between literature and financial systems. Recent projects explore cultural value and finance in contemporary contexts. Articles appear in journals such as Contemporary Literature, Cinema Journal, and Poetics Today, with contributions to collections like Postcolonial Whiteness and Haunted Landscapes.
Trimm’s interdisciplinary work connects literature to broader sociopolitical themes, including Thatcher’s legacy, multiculturalism, and the afterlife of cultural forms. He has engaged with public humanities through radio appearances (MLA’s What’s the Word) and collaborative projects.
