Valerie Babb is the Andrew Mellon Professor of Humanities at Emory University, holding a joint appointment in the Departments of African American Studies and English. She earned her BA from Queens College (CUNY), and MA/PhD from the University at Buffalo (SUNY). Her research focuses on African American literature, constructions of race, and whiteness studies. Notable works include A History of the African American Novel (2017) and the forthcoming The Book Of James (2023). She has received prestigious fellowships and teaching awards, including the W. M. Keck Foundation Fellowship and the NAACP Mary McLeod Bethune Image Award. Babb has led interdisciplinary initiatives like the Mellon Foundation-funded Penn Center project, emphasizing community-engaged learning. She is a Scholar-in-Residence at the Schomburg Center and has lectured globally on race and cultural studies.
Her research blends literary analysis with sociopolitical critique, exploring themes of Black identity, cultural representation, and historical memory. Recent works analyze LeBron James as a cultural icon navigating American antiblackness. She prioritizes mentorship and experiential education, designing courses like 'Early Black Print Culture' and 'African American Novels and Popular Culture.'
