Valentina Todisco is a PostDoc researcher at the University of Salzburg, Austria, affiliated with the Department of Environment & Biodiversity. Her academic background includes a PhD in Evolutionary Biology and Ecology from the University of Rome Tor Vergata (2008) and postdoctoral positions at institutions like the University of Vienna and University of Oulu. She also holds a permanent teaching position in Italian middle schools since 2018.
Research interests focus on biogeography, evolutionary biology, and molecular phylogenetics, particularly using genetic data to understand species distribution patterns and biodiversity. Her work often involves analyzing museum specimens to address challenges in sampling and reconstructing evolutionary histories, with a primary focus on butterflies.
Recent publications emphasize studies on hybrid zones in Parnassius species, Saharan butterfly biogeography, and taxonomy of rare Lepidoptera using ancient DNA. Todisco has received grants such as the FWF Austrian fellowship and awards including the Research Excellence poster presentation at the 6th International Barcode of Life Conference.
Her research contributes to conservation efforts through studies on endangered species and extinct populations, leveraging advanced techniques like next-generation sequencing and machine learning for morphological analysis. She is actively involved in entomological societies, including serving as Secretary of the Italian Association of Lepidopterology (ALI).
