Valérie Saugera is an Associate Professor in the Department of French Studies at the University of Connecticut. Her research focuses on languages in contact, lexical borrowing, and etymology, particularly in French Anglicisms and the argot Louchébem of Parisian butchers. She holds a Ph.D. in French Linguistics from Indiana University. Her work has been published by Oxford University Press, including her 2017 book Remade in France: Anglicisms in the Lexicon and Morphology of French, which explores the impact of global English on French neologisms.
Her current projects investigate the secret language Louchébem, analyzing its sociolinguistic significance and longevity. She has received grants from the NEH and the American Philosophical Society. Saugera’s research bridges historical linguistics with contemporary language dynamics, emphasizing both global and localized linguistic phenomena.
Her publications span academic journals such as Forum for Modern Language Studies, La Linguistique, and Journal of French Language Studies, covering topics like argotology, morphological adaptation, and language policy. She is also affiliated with UConn’s Oak Hall office (Room 249) and actively contributes to linguistic discourse through blogs and scholarly writing.
