Vajira Manathunga

Dr. Vajira Manathunga is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), affiliated with the School of Concrete and Construction Management. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (2016), an M.S. from MTSU (2010), and a B.S. from the University of Colombo (2005). His expertise spans actuarial science, insurance mathematics, and applications of machine learning in risk management. He is a certified Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA).

Dr. Manathunga’s research focuses on interdisciplinary topics such as predictive modeling in insurance, pandemic risk assessment, and financial derivatives pricing. Notable projects include developing web-based tools for loss reserving and exploring stochastic models for bond pricing under pandemic scenarios. His work bridges mathematical theory with practical applications in insurance and public policy.

His academic contributions include pioneering a new actuarial science program at MTSU and advancing knot theory through studies on Jones polynomials. His research has been disseminated through peer-reviewed journals and Google Scholar citations.
