Uwe Send

Professor Uwe Send is a leading researcher in physical oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), UC San Diego. His primary affiliation is as a Professor in the Department of Physical Oceanography, within the Climate, Atmospheric Sciences, and Physical Oceanography (CAP) division. His research focuses on ocean circulation dynamics, including thermohaline circulation, boundary currents, coastal processes, and ocean-climate interactions. He leads the Ocean Time-Series Group dedicated to multi-disciplinary time-series observations using moored sensors.

Professor Send holds advanced degrees: M.S. from the University of Sussex (UK), M.S. from the University of Southampton (UK), and a PhD from UCSD/SIO. His work integrates observational technologies like PIES, moorings, and satellite data to study phenomena such as CO2 uptake, ocean acidification, and meridional overturning circulation (MOC). Key projects include the SWOT satellite validation effort, the CORC Del Mar initiative, and the CALYPSO Mediterranean study.

His research group operates from Nierenberg Hall at SIO, deploying advanced instrumentation for real-time data collection. Notable contributions include defining coastal mooring configurations for ecosystem monitoring and analyzing the 2020 California red tide event. His work bridges physical oceanography with biogeochemical processes, emphasizing long-term observational networks like OceanSITES.

Current projects involve boundary current observations off Sri Lanka, Loop Current dynamics in the Gulf of Mexico, and deep-water circulation studies using GRACE satellite data.
