Uwe Nagel is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Kentucky, part of the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Paderborn (1990). His research focuses on Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic Combinatorics, and Computational Mathematics. He has advised over a dozen doctoral students, including current advisee Michael Morrow and notable graduates like Aida Maraj (2020) and William Trok (2020).
His work includes pioneering studies on Lefschetz properties, algebraic combinatorics, and computational methods in algebraic geometry. Notable contributions include investigations into Gorenstein liaison, syzygies of algebraic varieties, and applications of Gröbner bases. His research bridges pure mathematics with computational tools, as evidenced by his Maple procedure for computing S-minimal curves.
Teaching spans advanced courses such as Nonlinear Algebra (MA 765), Linear Algebra (MA 565), and Modern Algebra sequences. He has coordinated Calculus I courses, emphasizing foundational instruction. His publications span over three decades, with recent works addressing Weak Lefschetz properties, Jacobian schemes, and equivariant Hilbert series.
