Usman Iqbal is a Research Professor (Level E) at the Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare, Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine, Bond University. He is also the Leader of the Evidence-Based Practice Professorial Unit at Gold Coast Hospital and Health Services (GCH & HSEBPU) and holds adjunct and associate academic appointments at UNSW and Ariadne Labs (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health & Brigham and Women’s Hospital), reflecting his extensive national and international academic engagement.
His educational background includes:
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Informatics/Biomedical Informatics from Taipei Medical University
- Graduate Certificate in Innovations in Global Health Informatics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Harvard
- Master in Business Administration (MBA) in Healthcare Administration from Taipei Medical University
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science & Technology
Dr. Iqbal's research is centered on leveraging technology to improve healthcare quality, patient safety, and evidence-based practice. His work integrates Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI, machine learning, and mobile health to develop innovative solutions for patient monitoring, disease prevention, and personalized care. He emphasizes cross-border collaborations, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and is committed to addressing global healthcare disparities through digital innovation.
His scientific contributions have been widely recognized. He is ranked among the top 2% of scientists globally in Medical Informatics (Stanford, 2022–2024). His awards include the Taiwan Top Online MOOCS Course Award (2021), the Special Outstanding Professional Award (2020), and multiple Research Publication Excellence Awards. He is a Fellow of several prestigious organizations, including FACHI, AIDH, ACHSM, ISQua, and IAHSI.
Dr. Iqbal has secured over AUD 4 million in research grants and has published more than 190 peer-reviewed articles. He is actively involved in mentoring at hackathons and datathons and serves on the Future Leaders Advisory Board for the International Network of Health Promoting Hospitals and Health Services (FL-HPH). He has collaborated with MIT and Sana mHealth on LMIC-focused innovations and advised AI startups such as AESOP, ASKiN, and Dynaccurate. As co-founder of the Taiwan OHDSI chapter, he promotes the use of observational health data for research. Currently, he is a Co-Investigator on an NHMRC IDEAs grant developing an AI-powered chatbot (TRIBOT study) to overcome language barriers in NSW emergency departments.
He is also affiliated with several research teams and initiatives, including the Evidence-Based Practice Professorial Unit, Ariadne Labs, and the Taiwan OHDSI chapter. His leadership in digital health innovation and policy influence—such as contributing to FDA guideline revisions on Benzodiazepines—demonstrates the real-world impact of his work.
