Usha Reena Rungoo serves as Assistant Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures and Faculty Associate at Harvard University. Her academic journey began with a BA in French Studies (Quebecois Literature) from Trent University (2008), followed by an MA in French Studies from Queen's University (2011), and culminated in a PhD in French Studies and African American Studies from Yale University (2018).
Her research centers on Caribbean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific Ocean Literatures, Global South Islands, and Oceanic Studies. She investigates how Global South islands function as colonial laboratories and potential sites of restorative justice. Her book projects, Textual Territories and The Laboratory Island, explore literary geographies of resistance and the historical transformation of islands from colonial labor systems to tourism/military complexes, respectively. She argues that aesthetic experimentation in island literatures offers powerful tools for shifting perspectives and enacting political change.
Publications in PMLA, Wasafari, and The Progressive demonstrate her commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship. Professor Rungoo actively engages with the question of the humanities' utility, positioning literature as a practical intervention in understanding the world.
