Ursula Mense-Petermann is a Professor of Economic Sociology and the Sociology of Work at Bielefeld University's Faculty of Sociology. Her research focuses on economic globalization, transnationally mobile work, and world society theory. She leads the DFG Research Training Group "Cross-border Labour Markets" (2024-2029) and co-convened the ZiF Research Group "In Search of the Global Labor Market" (2017-2018).

Her research explores transnational labor markets, boundary-spanning work, and globalization's impact on SMEs, using interdisciplinary approaches combining economic sociology and historical analysis. She has published extensively on expatriate managers, cross-cultural organizational challenges, and market-making processes in globalized industries like meat production.
Scientific awards include the 1999 Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie PhD Award and the 2000 Best PhD in Humanities from Magdeburg University. She has served in DFG Senate Committees and directed Bielefeld's Graduate School in History and Sociology (2016-2020).
