Urs Matthias Zachmann is Professor of History and Culture of Modern Japan at the Department of History and Cultural Sciences, Freie Universität Berlin (since 2016). He holds a PhD and Habilitation in Japanese Studies, with extensive academic experience at Heidelberg University, University of Edinburgh, and University of Munich.

- Research Focus: Intellectual history of modern Japan, East Asian international relations, legal history, and cultural transfers
His groundbreaking ERC-funded project Law without Mercy (2018-2023) analyzed Japanese military justice systems during the Asia-Pacific War (1937-45) as mechanisms for violence regulation and ideological reinforcement. Publications include award-winning monographs on Meiji-era China policy and postwar international law.
Scientific Awards:
- JaDe-Preis 2010 for China and Japan in the Late Meiji Period
His work bridges law, history, and political science, with particular emphasis on the interplay between legal frameworks and wartime violence in East Asia. Current projects involve comparative studies of the Paris Peace Conference's impact on East Asian order.
