Una O'Connor Bones is a Senior Lecturer and Research Director (Education) at the School of Education, Ulster University. She holds affiliations with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences and serves as a PhD Examiner at Dublin City University, Durham University, and the University of Exeter. Her research focuses on educational inclusion, special educational needs, and civic education, with a particular emphasis on policy analysis and social justice in Northern Ireland. She has secured over £1.7M in research funding across 38 projects, including work on sustainable schooling and SEN policy.
Her research interests are anchored in an ecological model of social justice, exploring topics like stakeholder engagement in education and the classroom assistant workforce. She has contributed to REF Impact Case Studies and serves on the British Educational Research Association’s ethical guidelines review group.
Awarded the 2022 BERA Public Engagement and Impact Award, her work bridges academia and policy, with publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. She supervises doctoral researchers in areas such as special education, youth work, and sensory processing in education.
