Umut Var is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Religious Sources within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focuses on medieval religious texts, Byzantine history, and apocalyptic literature. He holds a PhD in Medieval History from Istanbul Medeniyet University (2018–2024), complemented by MAs in Medieval History (Istanbul Medeniyet University, 2016–2018) and Humanities (La Trobe University, 2014–2015), alongside double bachelor’s degrees in Classical Philology and History from Istanbul University (2010–2014).
His research interests include eschatological themes in Syriac apocryphal texts, Byzantine imperial narratives, and the interplay between theology and politics in medieval sources. Recent publications analyze the 'Last Emperor' motif in apocalyptic writings and the political-theological dimensions of Byzantine hagiographies like Vita Basilii.
Var is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Association for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (2015–2025). His work bridges textual analysis, historical context, and theological interpretation, contributing to scholarly debates on late antique and medieval religious thought.
