Umer Farooq is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader in Automotive Engineering at the University of Sunderland. He holds a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI) and a Master's in Electronics Engineering from the University of Nice, France. His academic career spans over a decade of full-time teaching and leadership roles in higher education, focusing on programme design, quality assurance, and academic management.
His research interests revolve around Machine Learning for EDA, IoT systems, reconfigurable architectures, and FPGA-based solutions. He actively collaborates on projects involving embedded systems security, CAD optimization for FPGAs, and efficient routing algorithms. Farooq is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), a Senior Member of IEEE, and a member of several professional bodies including the IET and Pakistan Engineering Council.
His publications emphasize advancements in FPGA backend flows, IoT healthcare systems, and multi-carrier communication technologies. Collaborations extend to industry partners and international journals like IEEE Access and Springer Computing. Farooq is also engaged in mentoring PhD students and supervising graduate projects in automotive dynamics, control systems, and embedded design.
