Ulrik Schmidt is an Associate Professor at Roskilde University's Department of Communication and Arts, specializing in sound studies, media philosophy, and audiovisual aesthetics. He holds a PhD from the University of Copenhagen (2010), an MA in Modern Culture (2005), and a BA in Music and Sociology (1998). His research explores intersections between sound art, media archaeology, and environmental soundscapes, with notable works including A Philosophy of Ambient Sound (2023) and Media Aesthetics (2020).
Key research areas include sonic environmentality, materiality, and the aesthetics of production. He co-edited The Ambient: Sensation, Mediatization, Environment (2013) and has organized major events like the 2026 Ambient Music Conference. Schmidt is affiliated with the Centre for Digital Citizenship and contributes to projects like the ongoing Seismograf/DMT initiative.
