Professor Ulrich Herbert is a leading historian at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (Frias) within Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg. He specializes in European and German history from the 19th to 20th centuries, particularly focusing on National Socialism, forced labor systems, migration history, and extermination policies.
As Director of the Frias School of History since 2007, he has spearheaded large-scale historical research projects and co-edits the Munich-based Journal for Modern European History. His lecture on 'Ten Million Aliens on German Soil' highlighted the critical role of foreign forced laborers in Nazi Germany, addressing the complex interplay between economic necessity and racial ideology during WWII.
