Prof. Ulrich Herbert is a Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and Director of the School of History at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS). His research focuses on 20th-century German history, Nazi policies, forced labor, and immigration. Born in 1951, he studied history, Germanistics, and folklore in Freiburg, followed by a career in education and academic research. He has held positions at the Fernuniversität Hagen and directed the Research Institute for National Socialism in Hamburg before joining Freiburg in 1995.
Key publications include Geschichte der Ausländerpolitik in Deutschland (2001) and Best. Biographische Studien (1996). He received the Leibniz Prize (1999) and contributed to major research projects like Nationalsozialistische Vernichtungspolitik (1998). His current FRIAS project, Deutschland im 20. Jahrhundert, aims to contextualize German history within a comparative European framework.
Research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating political, economic, and cultural dimensions of history. He has advised no listed students but collaborates with international scholars via FRIAS and the Historical Seminar in Freiburg.
