Prof. Dr. Ulrich Fritsche is a Professor of Economics with a focus on Empirical Economic Research at the University of Hamburg, affiliated with the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and the Department of Social Economics. He also serves as a Research Professor at the Konjunkturforschungsstelle (KOF) of ETH Zurich (since 2010) and is a member of the Research Program on Forecasting at George Washington University (since 2013).
His research focuses on applied macroeconomic analysis, particularly the mechanics of expectation and forecast formation in economic models, European integration, and interdisciplinary approaches to expectation research using computational linguistics and text-as-data methods. His team has explored topics such as inflation narratives in media, the role of expectations during crises like the 2008 financial collapse and the coronavirus pandemic, and the integration of behavioral economics into macroeconomic frameworks.
At the University of Hamburg, he leads projects like the Digital and Data Literacy in Teaching Lab (DDLitLab), which bridges economics and data science through courses like 'Data Science for Socioeconomists.' His work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, drawing on psychology, political science, and media studies to understand economic decision-making processes.
