Ulla-Karin Schön is a Professor of Social Work at Stockholm University's Department of Social Work within the Faculty of Social Sciences. She is affiliated with two research groups: The Research Group in Psychosocial Work and The Care Research Group, both focused on understanding interactions between care recipients and professionals, and examining issues of disability, aging, and long-term care within social policy contexts.
Her research interests span mental health and disability services with a focus on recovery-oriented care approaches. She investigates user participation, shared decision-making, social justice, and epistemic justice, with particular emphasis on co-production with experts by experience. Her recent work explores digital support for client participation, implementation strategies for new interventions in social services, and support systems for young people not in employment or education.
Analysis of her publication record reveals consistent focus on user involvement across multiple contexts - child welfare, mental health services, aging care, and support for NEET youth. Her work consistently addresses power dynamics between service users and professionals, with growing emphasis on epistemic justice and the legitimacy of experiential knowledge in healthcare and social service systems.
She leads the UserInvolve research program focused on enhancing user involvement in community mental health services and contributes to interdisciplinary projects examining person-centered social practices and implementation of new interventions in social services and healthcare.
