Dr Uli Schwarz-Linek is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Impact in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews. Their research focuses on structural biology and protein biochemistry, with a specialization in bacterial and viral virulence factors. Key interests include TIE proteins of Gram-positive pathogens, Rift Valley fever virus NSs proteins, and protein engineering for diagnostics and nanotechnology. Dr Schwarz-Linek has made significant contributions, including the discovery of covalent binding mechanisms in host-microbe interactions.
Research awards include the iGEM Gold Medal (2019) and the Leopoldina-Preis für junge Wissenschaftler (1999). They supervise PhD student Riona Datta-Savage and lead projects funded by the Wellcome Trust, MRC, and BBSRC. Current research priorities include cryo-EM analysis of bacterial surface appendages and Rift Valley fever virus filaments.
Collaborations span structural biology techniques (X-ray crystallography, NMR) and industrial applications in protein engineering. The lab develops tools for covalent protein tagging and stabilization of therapeutic proteins.
