Prof. Uli Cluss serves as Professor of Communication Design (focusing on Corporate Design) in the Design Department and Head of the Institute for Book Design and Media Development at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart since 2003. Previously, he was Professor for Visual Communication at Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences (1996-2003) and has co-founded the design agency "SeidlCluss" specializing in corporate design for cultural institutions and industrial companies.
His academic foundation includes a Diploma in Communication Design from the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart (1989), followed by prestigious scholarships at Akademie Schloss Solitude and DAAD/Italy (1991/1992). Early career involved lecturing and art direction at agencies including GGK Düsseldorf/Frankfurt and Springer & Jacoby Hamburg (1990-1996).
Cluss's work centers on developing conceptually strong designers through Robert Musil's philosophy of "a sense of possibility" within realistic constraints. His expertise spans corporate identity systems, book design innovation, and cross-media communication—from analog print to digital interfaces. Teaching integrates fictional projects with real-world corporate design challenges to cultivate artistic competence in evolving communication landscapes.
Key recognitions include:
- Akademie Schloss Solitude Scholarship
- DAAD/Italy Scholarship
As Institute Head, he supervises forward-looking projects like financial data visualization using Alpha Vantage Stock API, driving media development while mentoring students in professional artistic practice across traditional and emerging design contexts.
