Ulf Engel is a Professor of 'Politics in Africa' at the Institute of African Studies, Faculty of History, Art and Regional Sciences at the University of Leipzig. He has held this position since July 2006 and currently serves as Director of the France Center at Leipzig University since June 2022. His academic career spans several decades with significant leadership roles including Director of the Graduate Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (2018-2021) and Co-Speaker of the Integrated Graduate College of SFB 1199 'Processes of Spatialization under the Global Condition' (2016-2024).
Professor Engel's research interests center on:
- Development of continental and regional organizations in Africa, particularly the African Union and Regional Economic Communities
- Policies related to governance, peace, and security in African regional organizations
- The role of Africa's regional organizations in globalization processes
- Political developments in South Africa and Southern Africa, as well as in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa
His methodological approach combines Global Studies, International Studies, critical area studies, and transregional studies. Professor Engel has led several significant research projects including 'Interregionalism and Security in the Sahel: The African Union, ECOWAS, and the European Union' (2020-2023) and 'Political Populism in Southern Africa' (2020-2024).
His recent publications focus on the African Union, with multiple volumes of the 'Yearbook on the African Union' demonstrating his expertise in African regional integration, governance structures, and security frameworks. His work consistently bridges historical and sociological institutionalism with practice theory to analyze Africa's evolving political landscape within global contexts.
Professor Engel teaches across multiple programs including BA African Studies, MA African Studies, MA Global Studies, and MA Sustainable Development. He also contributes to doctoral education through the Graduate School Global and Area Studies and the Integrated Graduate College of SFB 1199.
