Ujjayant Chakravorty is the John Dibiaggio Professor of Citizenship and Public Service and Professor of Economics at Tufts University's School of Arts and Sciences. He holds affiliations with the Tufts Environmental Studies Program and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Previously, he served as a Canada Research Chair and Professor at the University of Alberta and taught at Emory University and the University of Hawaii. His research focuses on resource and environmental economics, energy poverty, water management, and climate policy.
Chakravorty earned a BS in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and a PhD in Resource and Environmental Economics from the University of Hawaii. He has held visiting roles at institutions such as the Sorbonne, Geneva Graduate Institute, and Renmin University. His work explores topics like rural electrification in India, biofuel impacts on global food prices, groundwater markets in China, and deforestation dynamics.
He is Co-Editor of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management and serves on editorial boards of multiple journals. Notable awards include the Gilbert F. White Fellowship and recognition as a CESifo Fellow. His research has been funded by NSF, NOAA, SSHRC, and others, with publications in top journals like the American Economic Review and Journal of Political Economy.
